Doodling

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I just realized the reason doodling is so important is because it is so telling of us. We doodle only when we are so very distracted by something else, that a part of our bodies (and with it a part of our minds) has felt free enough to produce without effort. That’s kinda wow. You might call it Art of the Subconscious, but since there’s already so much “Subconscious Art” (and people would surely miss the enormous novelty of this new term), we better call it something else. Upon reflection, “doodling” is perfect.

Working smart

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I used to think that “working smart”, as in the expression “Don’t work hard, work smart“, was essentially the same thing as being lazy. Because the smart work of some seems to go further than the hard work of others, those who have a capacity for smart work don’t seem to work very hard or very often. But I realize now that working smart has less in common with laziness than it does with efficiency. For every task, there is precisely one way to carry it out using the least amount of energy. Thus, it is an occupation to spend your time just thinking about working, so that when you do work it is always to great effect.
